This project is titled, "The Dandelions Among Us;" a metaphor for the prevalent and deeply rooted nature of sexual violence, and how victims often feel devalued by society despite the bountiful beauty and benefits dandelions afford to our environment. The project aims to resource those affected by sexual violence in the Muslim community and to help the participants learn new modalities of healing in a culturally safe space.
Our community cannot move forward without first addressing our roots, and we cannot address our roots without the unearthing - the unravelling - of all that we’ve buried. The topic of sexual violence is still taboo within the Muslim Community, and victims are often afraid to seek help or talk about their experiences due to the shame they’ve been burdened to carry.
Sometimes our voices feel like whispers in a sea of opinions, stories, and ideas about who we are. When it comes to talking about gendered Islamophobia, our voice can feel like a drop in the ocean. It can feel like a scream that can’t be heard. Sisters Dialogue in collaboration with Third Space Playback Theatre Edmonton created a space for diverse and racialized Muslim women to gather their voices, to take up the space that you need and to raise your voices into a wave that can be heard. This online performance with Playback as a part of an ongoing collaboration to create space of sharing and future dialogue with the concerns of Muslim women to the wider public in Edmonton. In this performance, we hope to connect, create a space of courage and safety and create momentum for future initiatives.
In collaboration with other sisters in the community, Sisters Dialogue created a safe virtual space to explore concerns pertaining to domestic violence such as recognizing different forms of abuse and cultural stigma.
